Old Unionite pens leadership book

Leadership is no longer just about ethics and character, it has evolved to being about disruption, innovation and transformation.

These are some of the thoughts that are captured in a new book by Old Unionite, Luphumlo T Joka.

Luphumlo matriculated from Union High School in 2011.

While at school, he was a fantastic example of a true ‘all-rounder’, serving as member of the RCL and later as prefect, excelling in academics, sports, culture and receiving special recognition at the senior prizegiving for the learner who best exemplified moral courage, consideration for and helpfulness to others.

After matriculating, Luphumlo continued to develop into a world-class leader, maximizing his leadership potential and excelling in his community and place of work.

He went on to become a graduate of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) launched by President Barack Obama and has since raked in numerous leadership awards, including the prestigious Nelson Mandela University Excellence in Leadership Award, awarded by the Department of Student Governance.

He was also chosen – out of 6 000 applicants – to participate in Season 6 of ‘One Day Leader’, a reality television series that tackles the issue of leadership amongst the youth.

He currently serves as the founding director of Global Leadership Consultants, a leadership and business development firm based in Port Elizabeth.

In addition to this, he is a Keynote Speaker, corporate MC and generic leadership coach that is passionate about speaking on leadership, purpose and entrepreneurship. His presentations and talks have been described as “challenging, thought provoking and practical”.

In 2019, his passion for the field of leadership, saw him publish, ‘The Ultimate Leader-Shift’, a self-help book that focuses on a series of global shifts currently taking place in the world of leadership.

In this book, Luphumlo presents the concept of ‘Heart-Centered Leadership’ in light of innovation, disruption, change and entrepreneurship.

Endorsed by Member of Parliament Bantu Holomisa and Switzerland-based Professor and Global Speaker Dr. Elijah Morgan, the book places a great emphasis on love being the ultimate engine to authentic leadership.

Luphumlo is part of an extraordinary roster of Union High School alumni that continue to make us proud of their accomplishments as knowledgeable leaders in their fields and their contributions to an educated, democratic society.
