It was an eagerly anticipated morning as Old Unionites, accompanied by their spouses, reached the Union High School hall on Friday, 9 August, to attend the school’s annual Interschools Assembly.
Guests were warmly received in front of the hall by the school’s marimba band before they filtered into the hall.
In what was a novel experience for the learners, they had to watch the assembly from outside on a big screen especially erected on the school’s tennis courts as the hall was close to overflowing with past pupils come to share in the moment.
Headboy Peter Watermeyer welcomed all to the gathering with a sense of pride and privilege. He also extended a very warm welcome to the school’s alumni who made the effort to attend the event.
This was followed by a Bible reading by Deputy Headboy Khanya Butshingi and a prayer by Deputy Headgirl Zintle Maki.
Zach Verwey and Jourdan Koeberg then delivered a short message of welcome on behalf of Union Preparatory School.
Dr. Isabel van der Merwe, Headgirl of the Class of 1994, followed this with a captivating speech as the event’s guest speaker.
The traditional Headmaster’s Address was then delivered by Mr. William Pringle, which was followed by a beautiful rendition of “Adiemus” performed by the school’s combined junior and senior choir.
The Head Prefect’s message, delivered by Headgirl Jenna McNaughton, was followed by a very proud, yet nostalgic moment, when all those gathered sang the school song.
The assembly was concluded with the introduction of the 1st rugby and hockey team and the singing of “The world in union”.
Overall it was a truly lovely morning spent reminiscing for all the Union alumni who attended the event.
